Iran - September 2022

Violent crackdown on mass protests

A wave of mass protests broke out in Iran on 16 September in response to the detention and subsequent killing of a young Kurdish woman by the country’s morality police. Mahsa Amini was arrested for failing to properly comply with Iran’s mandatory hijab law. She suffered alleged beating at the hands of the security forces, leading to numerous injuries that caused her death later the same day. Her death fuelled nationwide outrage and protests that have resulted in at least 60 deaths and hundreds of arrests from the government’s violent clampdown, including a shutdown of the internet.
