Junta claims to have foiled an attempted coup d’état
Following several days during which rumours of an attempted coup d’état circulated on social media, Capt. Ibrahim Traore, the leader of the military junta that took power in Burkina Faso’s second coup of 2022 in September, claimed that a coup plot had been foiled. No one was reported to have been arrested. Capt. Traore claimed that he knew who was responsible and would engage them in dialogue.

Broadcasts of Radio France Internationale suspended by communication regulator
In the aftermath of a report of an attempted coup d’état, the High Council of Communication (CSC) suspended the authorization for Radio France Internationale (RFI) to broadcast its programmes in Burkina Faso. The military junta ruling the country accused RFI of broadcasting “misleading information” and supporting terrorism. The suspension was condemned by organizations supporting media freedom, including the Committee to Protect Journalists and Journalists Without Borders. Burkina Faso’s suspension of RFI follows a similar decision by the military junta in Mali in April.
