From 7 September to 9 September, International IDEA facilitated and organized a horizontal cooperation mission between the Electoral Tribunal of Panama (TE) and the Supreme Elections Tribunal (TSE) of Costa Rica to explore possibilities to provide technical support to the TSE in preparation for the February 2022 national elections in Costa Rica in the area of monitoring political campaigns on social media, dissemination of fake news, disinformation and divisive and polarizing speech.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, numerous countries invoked different constitutional provisions and laws to respond to the unexpected health crisis. In Moldova’s recent parliamentary elections, social media formed a prominent environment for election campaigning. To promote transparency and ultimately the integrity of the electoral process, International IDEA supported a Moldovan democracy watchdog MediaPoint and its partner, a Slovenian non-profit media monitoring agency MEMO98 in monitoring social media during the early parliamentary elections in July 2021.

The respect for the Constitution and the rule of law are key democratic principles that all democratic nations must adhere to.

We urge for the protection and safeguarding of the most vulnerable and their rights, especially women, and continued respect for journalists, NGO workers, academics and other champions of democratic freedoms.
