Since May 2023, in light of the intensification of Ukraine’s EU candidacy, International IDEA has supported Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada in enhancing its understanding of the European Parliament’s law-making and internal functioning. As the Rada works towards more intensive EU law transposition, both expertise and direct engagement with European legislators have become vital.

The Dutch Chairship of International IDEA in 2023 culminated in the second bi-annual Council of Member States meeting and a set of side events, organized on 30 November and 1 December 2023 at the Institute’s headquarters in Stockholm and online. In its role as the Chair of the Institute, the Netherlands was supported by the Vice Chairs Ghana and Chile.

At the Council of Member States meeting convened on 1 December 2023 at International IDEA’s Headquarters in Stockholm, the Netherlands, represented by Ambassador Bengt van Loosdrecht, handed over the Chairship of International IDEA to Luxembourg, represented by Ambassador Henri Schumacher.
