In cooperation with the International Centre of Local Democracy (ICLD), International IDEA will today welcome 40 women politicians - 25 outside of Sweden, 13 from within Sweden - all active in local politics and governance.

BRUSSELS, 13 OCTOBER 2015--The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) and the European Parliament, in cooperation with the Friends of Europe, today launched Democratic Transitions: Conversations with World Leaders at an event at the Library of the European Parliament in Brussels.

Recent events in North Africa, commonly referred to as the Arab Spring, have led to an increased focus on the importance of constitution building as a participatory activity. The process of how constitutions are designed and implemented is changing and this shift allows for more opportunities for civil society to be involved and take on a greater role than in the past.

International IDEA will co-host a three-day Asian-African practitioners meeting on political finance regulation in Bandung, Indonesia, October 20-22. The aim is to bring people from two regions that have been hit hard by electoral corruption together to address some of the burning issues that confront social distortion because of corruption and influence of money on the political decision-making process.

Globally certification practice varies greatly between Electoral Management Bodies, with some countries not utilizing certification at all and others already having very comprehensive schemes in place.

International IDEA congratulates the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet on receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. International IDEA Myanmar has produced a series of infographics on women's participation, cancellation of elections and ethnic participation across the 1990, 2010 and 2015 Myanmar elections. These are compared to countries that have experienced transitional elections.

Research on Constitutional Transitions and Territorial Cleavages is available but questions from constitution building specialists in the field still linger, revealing that there is more to discuss and more to learn.

About 120,000 booklets with essential information for voter-education trainers, candidates, election agents and domestic election observers have now been released by the Union Election Commission (UEC), with support of International IDEA.

The 2030 Agenda embraces a transformative vision of peaceful and inclusive societies, access to justice and inclusive, accountable institutions that deliver sustainable development. Democratic transformations have marked the last 25 years in many ways and in many countries. None of them was inevitable. Each of them was deeply rooted in the local political, social and economic context.
