He served as Thailand's Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1997–2001, and as Secretary-General of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), from 2008–2012. Pitsuwan held a key role in the political history of his country and his region.

On Thursday 16 November 2017, the Secretary-General of International IDEA, Yves Leterme, visited The Hague, the Netherlands, to launch International IDEA´s new flagship publication, the Global State of Democracy: Exploring Democracy´s Resilience. This publication will be published on a bi-annual basis and provides a "health check" on how democracy is faring worldwide.
On 22 November 2017, the President (speaker) of the National Assembly of the Republic of Cape Verde and acting Head of State, Jorge Santos, officially opened the international workshop on “the use of new technology in electoral processes” in Praia, Cape Verde.

La distinción fue recibida por el Director para América Latina y el Caribe, Dr Daniel Zovatto, quien además impartió la conferencia magistral titulada: “El estado de la democracia en América Latina: situación actual y desafíos”.
On the auspices of the 75th anniversary since the establishment of democracy in Costa Rica, International IDEA was honored with the "Cátedra a la Democracia Award". The award was received by the Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Dr Daniel Zovatto, who also gave the keynote address entitled "The state of democracy in Latin America: current situation and challenges".

En la Ciudad de Guatemala tuvo lugar el foro “El financiamiento privado de la política en Guatemala y sus efectos en la democracia”, organizado por la Comisión Internacional contra la Impunidad en Guatemala (CICIG). El encuetro contó con un destacado panel de expertos encabezado: por el Comisionado Iván Velásquez, la presidenta del Tribunal Supremo Electoral guatemalteco (TSE), María Eugenia Mijangos y el Director para América Latina y el Caribe de IDEA Internacional, Daniel Zovatto.
