The forum "Private financing of politics in Guatemala and its effects on democracy" was held in Guatemala City, organized by the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG). The forum featured a distinguished panel of experts headed by the Commissioner Iván Velásquez, the president of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) of Guatemala, María Eugenia Mijangos and the Director for Latin America and the Caribbean of International IDEA, Daniel Zovatto.

On Wednesday 15 November 2017, International IDEA officially launched the first edition of its flagship publication, The Global State of Democracy: Exploring Democracy´s Resilience, in Stockholm, Sweden.

In world of information fatigue and fake news, the need to return to the facts and engage in an evidence-based dialogue underscored the speeches made at the official launch of the The Global State of Democracy: Exploring Democracy´s Resilience publication in Stockholm on 15 November.

On 10 November 2017, the Secretary-General of International IDEA, Mr Yves Leterme, travelled to Strasbourg, France, to participate in a high-level plenary panel discussion at the annual World Forum for Democracy.

One of the major challenges related to money in politics is the lack of transparency surrounding political party and electoral finance.

This is the case across the world and applies to established and newer democracies alike. Information on political party and candidate income and expenditure is rarely published online in a searchable and user-friendly manner.

On 19-20 October 2017, International IDEA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Gender Issues in Haiti, held an important forum that gathered women´s organizations and political parties to discuss the strategies and possible interventions to promote and strengthen the role of women in politics in the country.

The Regional Director of International IDEA for Latin America and the Caribbean, Dr Daniel Zovatto, participated along with a large group of former presidents and heads of state of Latin America and Spain, the Secretary General of the OAS and regional leaders, at the Second Presidential Dialogue: Towards Reinventing the Political Parties, organized by the Cátedra Mezerhane at Miami-Dade College.

El Director Regional de IDEA Internacional para América Latina y el Caribe, Dr Daniel Zovatto, participó junto a un importante grupo de expresidentes, jefes de Estado de América Latina y España, el Secretario General de la OEA y líderes regionales, en el foro II Diálogo Presidencial: “Hacia la Reinvención de los Partidos Políticos”; organizado por la Cátedra Mezerhane.

One month after having voted the national budget, both houses of parliament have received stark criticisms from Haitians, both within the country and abroad. Haiti is facing a tense situation due to repeated strikes in public transportation sector and weekly demonstrations, often ending in violence scenes and breakages.

As ongoing peace talks between the government, the armed forces and ethnic armed groups continue in Myanmar, there is an increased desire for more comparative expertise on constitutional principles and how they relate to implementing federalism. In response, International IDEA Myanmar held a series of seminars in Nay Pyi Taw and Yangon on federalism and key constitutional issues.
