13 December 2017 | COLOMBO—The world has experienced continued and steep democratic progress, however this progress has slowed down over the past decade.  Challenges and threats have emerged in specific countries and regions, according to the first edition of The Global State of Democracy publication from The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA).

On 6 December, Justice José Luis Vargas Valdez of the Mexican Federal Electoral Tribunal visited the headquarters of International IDEA in Stockholm, Sweden.

Global and regional organizations play an important role in the development of legal and policy frameworks, as well as in the design of effective action plans to better support the advancement of the gender equality agenda at the global, regional and national levels.

On 20–21 November, senior practitioners and experts attended a workshop in Stockholm aimed at developing a new Building Resources for Democracy, Governance and Elections (BRIDGE) module on the financing and budgeting of elections.

On 20 November, International IDEA Secretary-General Yves Leterme attended the launch of International IDEA’s flagship publication, The Global State of Democracy: Exploring Democracy's Resilience in Lima, Peru, as part of a series of launches aorund the world. 

It is with profound sadness that International IDEA reflects on the unexpected passing of Surin Pitsuwan. We express our sincere condolences to his family.

He served as Thailand's Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1997–2001, and as Secretary-General of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), from 2008–2012. Pitsuwan held a key role in the political history of his country and his region.

On 30 November 2017, International IDEA Secretary-General Yves Leterme moderated a panel discussion at the Riksdag, the national parliament of Sweden, in Stockholm. Celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Riksdag’s membership of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the panel focused on the future of cooperation between the United Nations, the IPU, and national parliaments.

29 November 2017 | GENEVA – Global democracy is at a crossroads and continuous actions must be taken to safeguard and protect it, according to the first edition of The Global State of Democracy publication from the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), which was launched today at the United Nations Office at Geneva.

On 28 November, International IDEA Secretary-General Yves Leterme launched International IDEA’s flagship publication, The Global State of Democracy: Exploring Democracy's Resilience, in Oslo, Norway, as part of a series of launches around the world. 

Although Myanmar held successful national elections in 2015 and by-elections in 2017, municipal elections lag far behind. The city of Yangon is yet to hold fully democratic elections and the electoral legal framework has not been updated since the colonial period.

The ninth edition of the Ibero-American Conference on Electoral Justice was held in San Miguel de Allende in Mexico from November 8 to 9 2017 with the theme "New trends to ensure fairness in the electoral contest in Ibero-America".
