Venezuela has scheduled parliamentary elections for 6 December where it will completely renew its National Assembly for a five-year term. Andrés Bello Catholic University (UCAB) and International IDEA published a report to provide a diagnosis and conclusions on the election, as well as to formulate recommendations on key aspects of electoral integrity.
El pasado viernes 27 de noviembre se firmó el Acuerdo de Sede entre el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de la República de Panamá y el Instituto Internacional para la Democracia y Asistencia Electoral (IDEA Internacional) para el establecimiento de su oficina regional para América Latina y El Caribe en la Ciudad de Panamá. La República de Panamá se incorporó como Estado miembro de IDEA Internacional el 9 de diciembre de 2018.
Last Friday, on November 27, the Host Country Agreement for the establishment of International IDEA´s Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean in Panama City was signed between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Panama and the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA). Panama´s admission as a member state of International IDEA came into force on December 9, 2018.
International IDEA celebrated its 25th Anniversary on the 19-20 of November through a 25-hour conference, "Democracy Now and Next." During the meeting, the Institute showcased its thematic expertise through 12 sessions and 63 speakers organized by our regional and country offices. The conference generated a global conversation about the future of democracy and the role of International IDEA.
On 3 February 2020, the High Court of Malawi sitting on constitutional matters nullified the presidential election that was held on 21 May 2019. That decision was upheld by the Supreme Court of Appeal on 8 May 2020. Various reforms were ordered by the courts and legislated by Parliament, most notably a change in the electoral system, from a simple majoritarian, or first-past-the-post (FPTP), system to a two-round system where the winner must receive over 50 per cent of the votes.
The COVID-19 outbreak has affected the world in all respects, including democracy and fundamental freedoms such as the freedoms of expression and movement, and the right to health. This presents a central challenge for democracies: how to balance mitigating the outbreak and at the same time respecting democratic principles such as accountability, transparency and respect for civil and political rights.

Over the past 25 years, I have lived in countries struggling to realize democracy. From Cambodia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka to the southern Caucasus, I have worked with committed democrats to design credible election systems, build independent institutions, develop effective checks and oversight, and create inclusive and competent representative bodies.
As the world watches the United States’ elections unfold, the intensity of our polarization is on display. This election was not marked by apathy. On the contrary—citizens turned out in record numbers, some standing in lines all day, to exercise their franchise with powerful determination and the conviction of their choice.

The Queensland (QLD) state election on Saturday 31 October 2020 was remarkable on several fronts. It was the first election in the state and Australia. The two leading candidates from the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and the Liberal-National Coalition (LNP) were females, Annastacia Palaszczuk and Deb Frecklington, respectively. In this election, surveys also predicted a close contest among the main parties. But the results proved polls wrong and granted Palaszczuk a third consecutive term.
The government of the Republic of Sudan and the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) have signed a memorandum of understanding that establishes a framework for International IDEA to provide assistance to Sudan’s democratic transition.
The Center on International Cooperation (CIC) at New York University has recently published a Briefing by Dr Kevin Casas-Zamora, the Secretary-General of the International IDEA and Sarah Cliffe, CIC, and Nendirmwa Noel.
In his final appraisal of the comprehensive evolution of the 2020 general election, Dr Salvador Romero, Chair of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), praised the support of international organizations from International IDEA and other national electoral observation missions engaged in the strengthening of democracy, describing the election as "the most complex in the country's democratic history".
In celebration of the International Day of Democracy, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), the European Partnership for Democracy, the European Endowment for Democracy, the European Network of Political Foundations and Carnegie Europe co-hosted together with the European Parliament a four-day conference that consisted of a series of online events marked as "International Democracy Week – Overcoming Adversity, Innovating Democracy".<
