Dili, Timor-Leste - The Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE), the National Elections Commission (CNE), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) are jointly organizing a Building Resources in Democracy, Governance and Elections (BRIDGE) workshop on financing of elections on 26-28 August in Dili, Timor-Leste.

On August 15 the Portuguese edition of Democratic Transitions: Conversations with World Leaders  was launched at an event organized by the Fernando Henrique Cardoso Foundation (FFHC) and IDEA International, in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

El tema del Objetivo de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) 16 como facilitador de la Agenda 2030 de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) en su totalidad, ha sido un tema común entre  Estados Miembro, organizaciones, partes interesadas y actores de la sociedad civil a lo largo  del Foro Político de Alto Nivel de 2019 (HLPF, por sus siglas en inglés), celebrado en Nueva York del 9 al 18 de julio.

Enhancing the integrity of political finance systems is one of the main ways to address political corruption.

In Asia, the comprehensiveness of political finance systems and the level of implementation vary significantly across countries. This policy paper draws on the 2018 data of the International IDEA Political Finance Database and covers South Asia, South East Asia and East Asia.

It investigates three key questions:

Unregulated flows of money in the funding of political parties and election campaigns threaten key democratic principles and values in African countries.

Within the framework of the United Nations High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF 2019) and the evaluation of the commitments towards achieving SDG16, International IDEA –with the support of the Electoral Tribunal of Mexico– organized the side event “Access to justice for all: effective, accountable and inclusive electoral institutions” on 15 July 2019 at the Uganda House in New York City.

The first Indigenous Peoples’ Constitutional Assessment Tool (IPCAT) workshop was hosted to enable 30 participants from five IP communities recognized in Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) to systematically analyze the legal framework for indigenous rights as represented by the 1987 Constitution, national Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA, 1997) and the BOL.

The first Indigenous Peoples’ Constitutional Assessment Tool (IPCAT) workshop was hosted to enable 30 participants from five IP communities recognized in Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL), including Bangsamoro Transitional Authority (BTA) indigenous MP Romeo Saliga, to systematically analyze the legal framework for indigenous rights in BARMM as represented by the 1987 Constitution, national Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA, 1997) and the BOL.

Over the past decade, technology, such as Biometric Voter Registration (BVR), has risen to meet complex electoral challenges. BVR measures and analyses a voter’s unique physical characteristics to verify their identify and their eligibility to vote.

In partnership with the National Association of Municipalities in Mozambique (ANAMM), International IDEA trained 20 municipal finance staff from eight municipalities on the strengthening of local tax collection.
