On 20–21 November, senior practitioners and experts attended a workshop in Stockholm aimed at developing a new Building Resources for Democracy, Governance and Elections (BRIDGE) module on the financing and budgeting of elections.

On 20 November, International IDEA Secretary-General Yves Leterme attended the launch of International IDEA’s flagship publication, The Global State of Democracy: Exploring Democracy's Resilience in Lima, Peru, as part of a series of launches aorund the world. 

On 30 November 2017, International IDEA Secretary-General Yves Leterme moderated a panel discussion at the Riksdag, the national parliament of Sweden, in Stockholm. Celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Riksdag’s membership of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the panel focused on the future of cooperation between the United Nations, the IPU, and national parliaments.

30 November 2017 | BRUSSELS – Global democracy is at a crossroads and continuous actions must be taken to safeguard and protect it, according to the first edition of The Global State of Democracy publication from the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), which will be presented today in the Egmont Palace in Brussels.

On 28 November, International IDEA Secretary-General Yves Leterme launched International IDEA’s flagship publication, The Global State of Democracy: Exploring Democracy's Resilience, in Oslo, Norway, as part of a series of launches around the world. 

On Thursday 16 November 2017, the Secretary-General of International IDEA, Yves Leterme, visited The Hague, the Netherlands, to launch International IDEA´s new flagship publication, the Global State of Democracy: Exploring Democracy´s Resilience. This publication will be published on a bi-annual basis and provides a "health check" on how democracy is faring worldwide.

On 22 November 2017, the President (speaker) of the National Assembly of the Republic of Cape Verde and acting Head of State, Jorge Santos, officially opened the international workshop on “the use of new technology in electoral processes” in Praia, Cape Verde.

On 16 November, International IDEA, in collaboration with Uppsala University, the Department of Peace and Conflict Research and student organizaiton Pax et Bellum, launched The Global State of Democracy: Exploring Democracy's Resilience publication along with the accompanying Global

What is the state of democracy around the world?

On Wednesday 15 November 2017, International IDEA officially launched the first edition of its flagship publication, The Global State of Democracy: Exploring Democracy´s Resilience, in Stockholm, Sweden.

In world of information fatigue and fake news, the need to return to the facts and engage in an evidence-based dialogue underscored the speeches made at the official launch of the The Global State of Democracy: Exploring Democracy´s Resilience publication in Stockholm on 15 November.

On 10 November 2017, the Secretary-General of International IDEA, Mr Yves Leterme, travelled to Strasbourg, France, to participate in a high-level plenary panel discussion at the annual World Forum for Democracy.

One of the major challenges related to money in politics is the lack of transparency surrounding political party and electoral finance.

This is the case across the world and applies to established and newer democracies alike. Information on political party and candidate income and expenditure is rarely published online in a searchable and user-friendly manner.

Honorable delegates, Madame Chair,

Is democracy really in trouble, or do recent events simply signal a temporary downward fluctuation?

Substate constitutions are broadly understood as written legal instruments that limit and structure political power at the substate level, with legal supremacy regarding other substate laws.

Today’s political landscape poses complex global challenges to democracies.

Polarized relations between a country’s political parties make it difficult to pursue reforms that are needed for democracy, peace and development. Trust and cooperation between parties is essential. Intra- and inter-party dialogue is often an inclusive and sustainable way for governments to find solutions to complex national issues. Dialogue requires politicians to properly engage with one another—to reflect, exchange views and seek consensus on the best solutions for citizens.
