Designing Resilient Institutions
This regional report on Asia applies the globally informed framework developed in International IDEA’s 2023 report Designing Resistance: Democratic Institutions and the Threat of Backsliding. Through case studies examining eight countries—India, Indonesia, Mongolia, the Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Thailand—the report aims to capture the patterns, dynamics and diversity of democratic challenges facing countries in Asia, which both align with, and depart from, global trends. The report concludes with a set of reflections for enhancing institutional resilience to counter governmental attacks, as well as suggestions for a research and policy agenda in this space.
