Improving the Resilience of Democracy in Central America

Mejorando la resiliencia democrática en Centroamérica
Democracy in Central America, particularly in the northern zone, is at a critical juncture. It is hard to find another region in the world with such a steep democratic erosion process: of the six countries that make up Central America, four have experienced democratic backsliding, either downgrading to hybrid regimes or to authoritarian governments, according to International IDEA’s Global State of Democracy 2022 report.

Improving the Resilience of Democracy in Central America aims to strengthen the capacities and initiatives of civil society organizations and the media in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, particularly focusing on young people and women, in defense of democracy.

Democracy needs not only free and fair elections but also active civil society organizations that foster engagement and dialogue across major divisions in society, and a free press that disseminates evidence-based information as a basis for dialogue and deliberation.
