South Africa enjoys rich natural resources and high levels of endemic biodiversity, in particular of marine species (Convention on Biological Diversity Secretariat). The country is a high per capita greenhouse gas emitter and is struggling to keep up with its commitments under the Paris Treaty, mainly due to its continued reliance on coal as a primary source of energy.
