In an environment dominated by fear and repression, the sham presidential elections scheduled for 26 January 2025 will once again strip Belarusians of their right to elect a legitimate leader and shape their democratic future. For nearly 30 years, elections in Belarus have failed to meet the standards of being free and fair.
Free and open campaigning by candidates opposing the ruling regime is impossible in a country deprived of freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of information. The regime, led by Aliaksandr Lukashenka, has perpetuated persistent violations of human rights. The liquidation of civil society organizations (CSOs), independent media, opposition parties and the persecution of activists have only intensified in recent months. This has cleared the way for Lukashenka’s ‘self-reappointment’—a carefully orchestrated effort to legitimize his ongoing rule.
For the third consecutive time, international observers from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) will be unable to monitor the electoral process. In the absence of the possibility to organize full-fledged independent observation, no assessment by independent and credible international observer missions will be available.
International IDEA urges the international community to condemn these elections and stands ready to support Belarusian citizens, independent media, CSOs and democratic actors. We call upon the international community to help the people of Belarus pave the way for a free, democratic and independent future. Only a democratic Belarus can guarantee the well-being of its citizens and the safety and security of those in its region.
