RoLAC promotes non-custodial measures in Nigeria
Through a series of townhall meetings held in key states including Adamawa, Anambra, Edo, Kano, Lagos, Plateau, and the Federal Capital Territory, the programme has significantly advanced the understanding and utilization of alternatives to incarceration, such as probation and community services.
These townhalls brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including judiciary representatives, law enforcement agencies, community leaders, and civil society organizations. Discussions centred on the benefits of non-custodial measures, particularly in reducing prison overcrowding and enhancing rehabilitation and reintegration processes for offenders, including women, juveniles, and persons with disabilities. Participants shared best practices and explored strategies to implement these measures effectively within the criminal justice system.
The townhall meetings also facilitated the dissemination of informative materials and posters, raising awareness about non-custodial measures among the general public. Importantly, they identified advocates and champions within the community who will continue to drive these conversations forward, ensuring the sustainability of these reforms.
The success of these engagements underscores the critical role of community involvement in justice reform.
By expanding the use of non-custodial measures, RoLAC II is contributing to a more equitable and effective criminal justice system in Nigeria, reducing recidivism, and promoting human rights and dignity.
