The event focused on enhancing the implementation of the Operational Guidelines for the Provision of Legal Protection and Redress under the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018.
Held in Abuja, this landmark event brought together key stakeholders from the legal sector, disability rights advocates, and representatives from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), including the Federal Ministry of Justice, the National Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and state-level disability rights commissions from Anambra and Plateau States.
The training aimed to equip participants with a deep understanding of the operational guidelines and the tools necessary to implement legal redress mechanisms effectively. The guidelines provide a clear framework for processing and addressing complaints related to discrimination against persons with disabilities, creating avenues for victims to seek justice through mechanisms like the Complaints Register and Complaints Room.
This event builds on the achievements of RoLAC I, which supported the enactment of the Disability Act and its adoption across various states. As part of RoLAC’s Component 2, this capacity-building effort aligns with the programme’s broader objective of improving access to justice for vulnerable groups, including women, children, and persons with disabilities.
Participants engaged in practical sessions that outlined the complaint handling process, administrative procedures for rights violations, and the establishment of referral pathways for legal redress. By fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing, the event provided a solid foundation for future interventions to ensure that the rights of persons with disabilities are upheld in Nigeria.
This initiative represents a critical step toward strengthening the legal framework protecting persons with disabilities and ensuring their rights are fully realized.
