Regional organizations to promote gender equality and the political empowerment of women

March 17, 2016

STOCKHOLM—The announcement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a push toward a global change process and regional organizations are joining in support of the initiatives.

International IDEA, the Community of Democracies, and the United Nations Development Programme will host a workshop 17 March in New York to discuss “Inter-Regional Organizations and the Promotion of Gender Equality and the Political Empowerment of Women."

Representatives from regional organizations, the UN, and civil society organizations have a critical role in monitoring and implementing the SDG goals. The workshop will focus on regional promotion, strategic framework for collaborations and coordination, and policy recommendations to strengthen the work of Goal 4 on Quality Education, Goal 5 on Gender Equality and Goal 16 on Peace, Justice and Strong Organizations.

“We join forces today to discuss and develop inter-regional initiatives to support gender equality”, said Massimo Tommasoli, Permanent Observer for International IDEA to the United Nations. “Only by working closely together can the regional organizations, the UN and civil society achieve gender equality and therefore the SDGs”

The outcome of the collaborative workshop will be a policy guidebook and an outcome synthesis document.

International IDEA will continue to support regional organizations in their implementation goals through 2017 in the Inter-Regional Dialogue for Democracy, which allows for sharing of lessons learned, dissemination of comparative knowledge and discussions for democratic change.
