International IDEA is deeply saddened by the passing of the former Finnish President and Nobel Peace laureate Martti Ahtisaari. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to Ahtisaari’s family and loved ones.
Ahtisaari's impact extends well beyond his home country of Finland. He will be remembered for his tireless and decades-long work to resolve international conflicts and advocate for peace across continents. He played a crucial role in peace and meditation processes in many countries, including in Namibia, Kosovo, and Indonesia. Ahtisaari’s dedication to promoting global peace was acknowledged in 2008 when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Throughout his career, he also held many notable positions at the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the United Nations.
Ahtisaari served as a Member of International IDEA’s Board of Advisers from 2000-2003 and was the President of Finland at the time when Finland, together with 13 other countries, founded International IDEA in 1995. His legacy will continue to inspire and inform the Institute’s work for a more democratic and just world for the years to come.
