New Report outlines principles for democratic electoral reform processes
The Global Network for Securing Electoral Integrity (GNSEI) launched a new report, Principles for Democratic Electoral Reform Processes. The report outlines key principles for conducting electoral reforms that align with the best global practices and foster trust among stakeholders.
Developed through over 50 consultations with diverse stakeholders worldwide, the Principles aim to build a shared understanding of and confidence in electoral reform processes, ultimately leading to more democratic elections. The Principles are designed to be adaptable to individual country contexts. Key principles include:
• Principle 1. Political consensus building is foundational to any electoral reform process.
• Principle 2. Electoral reform processes should be transparent.
• Principle 3. Electoral reform processes should be inclusive.
• Principle 4. Electoral reform processes should be informed by evidence and a long-term vision.
• Principle 5. Adequate timeframes and resources for a viable and democratic electoral
• reform process.
• Principle 6. Clear accountability structures are essential for electoral reform processes.
Launched in 2023, the GNSEI convenes over 30 organizations and networks committed to advancing electoral integrity. International IDEA is a proud member of this network.
