As Peru prepares for the coming regional and municipal elections, national and international experts will gather in Lima on 19 and 20 August for an international seminar on “Financing of Politics in Peru.” The aim is to analyze the role of money in politics, the role of political organizations in the country’s institutions and the financing of the current electoral campaign.
Sponsored by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), the National Office of Electoral Processes (Oficina Nacional de Procesos Electorales, ONPE) and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the seminar will be inaugurated by Mariano Cucho, director general of the ONPE; Percy Medina, International IDEA’s chief of mission for Peru; and Reinhardt Willig, representative of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.
Speakers:
- Daniel Zovatto (Argentina), International IDEA’s regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean, will provide an overview of money in politics today and the key challenges this presents.
- Iván Briscoe (Holland), senior researcher of the Clingendael Conflict Research Unit, will speak about challenges for the supervision of money in Peruvian politics.
- Juan Fernando Londoño (Colombia), director of the Political Analysis Center (Centro de Análisis Político) and former Colombian vice minister for internal affairs, will speak on illicit networks and politics in Latin America.
The presentations aim to provide insight into ways of protecting politics from the scourge of illicit financing. The seminar has been designed for political organizations, electoral oversight bodies, civil society, the media and others interested in the issue.
The event also includes round-table discussions with eminent panelists, including Raúl Castro, president of the Partido Popular Cristiano; Peruvian Vice President Marisol Espinoza; Congressman Santiago Gastañadui; Juan Bautista Mendoza, temporary titular prosecutor for narcotics cases; and Sonia Medina, anti-narcotics prosecutor.
