International IDEA & Switzerland reaffirm their partnership for democracy with four-year, 3.3-million-euro agreement

June 29, 2023

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) and Switzerland announced today a four-year, 3.3-million- euro (3.5 million CHF) agreement to support International IDEA’s democracy efforts.

Switzerland will provide core funds for IDEA’s operations and knowledge production and the implementation of its new Institutional Strategy announced in December 2022.

“Switzerland is a critical partner to International IDEA in our shared mission to strengthen peaceful, inclusive democracy for all,” said International IDEA Secretary-General Kevin Casas-Zamora. “At a time when democracy continues to be under attack around the world, Switzerland’s core support sends a strong signal of their continued commitment to the Institute and to democratic principles worldwide. We are grateful and look forward to our growing collaboration.”

Since 2006 Switzerland has been Member State of International IDEA, an intergovernmental organization with 34 Member States focused on advancing and protecting sustainable democracy worldwide. The four-year agreement for continued support is a clear endorsement of International IDEA and the shared dedication to democracy.

“Switzerland is pleased to affirm our continued close partnership with International IDEA through this agreement,” said Christine Schneeberger, Head of Peace, Governance and Equality, Swiss Development and Cooperation Agency. “Switzerland is strongly committed to democracy and uses the platform and knowledge of International IDEA for policy dialogues and countless programmes in partner countries that we have been running for decades.”
