International IDEA Statement on Sudan

October 26, 2021

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) is deeply concerned about the military coup as well as the arrests of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and other political representatives. We strongly urge the security forces to immediately release the Prime Minister and all detained staff and political leaders, and appeal to all parties to refrain from violence and re-commit to the constitutional charter. The democratic aspiration of the Sudanese people must be respected and all parties must adhere to the principles of the Juba Agreement and the constitution. It is only through sustained political dialogue and genuine political negotiation that sustainable peace and prosperity can be realized in Sudan.
