Inter-party dialogue in Lusaka

November 10, 2015

The 2016 Zambia elections will take place in a unique context following an economic recession and coming at a time when Zambia is trying to work out a new constitution. Leading up to the elections political parties will need to constructively and effectively contribute to the national dialogue and jointly agree on an electoral process to avoid conflicts following the election. There is a need to build trust among the parties, the citizens and other stakeholders to ensure a successful election.

In this context the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD), in partnership with the Zambia Centre for Interparty Dialogue (ZCID) will provide training on political party dialogue to 25 politicians in Zambia. The training will take place from 9-11 November in Lusaka and will be delivered using International IDEA and NIMD’s Training Module on Interparty Dialogue which the two institutions developed last year. The method has been so far been implemented successfully in Kenya and Nepal.

A total of 25 politicians, primarily members of the National Executive Committees (including party Provincial leaders) of the five parliamentary parties in Zambia as well as representatives of 10 non-parliamentary parties selected on the basis of their participation in the previous elections will participate.
