We strongly believe that access to democracy's benefits is a global human right, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity and expression. Democracy requires the commitment and active participation of all citizens, and enriching democracy with diverse visions and voices of sexuality are crucial to achieving better results.
Below are some of our most recent contributions on topics related to the political participation of LGBTQIA+ people, as well as other vulnerable or historically marginalized segments.
Launching the New Inclusion Portal
At a global level, we have a new Inclusion Portal. This is a platform that compiles global information that features the provisions in national frameworks-constitutions, political parties, and electoral laws on the inclusion of women, youth, ethnicity and indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities and LGBTQIA+ people.
The Inclusion Portal highlights recently published reports from International IDEA's catalogue and some publications from partner organizations.
Highly relevant publications from partners include:
- Building inclusive democracies: A guide to strengthening the participation of LGBTI+ persons in political and electoral processes by UNDP.
- A Call to Action for the Rights of LGBTIQ Yout, by UN.
- LGBTIQ+ Equality and Rights by UN Women.
- Advancing the Human Rights and Inclusion of LGBTI People: A Handbook for Parliamentarians by UNDP.
Writing topic-related publications
We publish reports on the political rights of historically discriminated segments, including LGBTQIA+. You can download these reports from our catalogue:
- Reforming Political Finance for More Diversity in Political Office
- Inclusión de grupos discriminados en los procesos políticos y electorales en América Latina
Analyzing LGBTIQ+ rights evolution on Democracy Notes Blog
The experts from the Democracy Assessment team review events taking place in various parts of the world and how these events affect different communities in the Democracy Tracker and the Democracy Notes Blog.
In the case of LGBTQIA+, we have shared a recent article that analyzed the advances of LGBTQIA+ rights in Asia, Explainer: Advances in LGBTQIA+ rights across Asia and the Pacific.
Supporting LGBTIQ+ from our regional offices programme
In Peru, International IDEA International recently concluded the program To Meet Each Other: Dialogues and Othernesses. In preparation for the regional and municipal elections in 2022, a cycle of seven plays was organized with the collaboration of USAID and the Place of Memory, Tolerance, and Social Inclusion.
More than 2,500 people watched and discussed the plays. This opened a space for reflection on how to integrate and claim the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community and other excluded communities.
The play, LibrEs (Free, in English), raised awareness about LGBTQIA+ problems and was presented in various locations in Peru. Jesús Oro and Nata Niño de Guzmán directed the stage. More information about the works can be found here.
