European Union and International IDEA partners with GPU to train journalists on the assault and battery guide
The various sessions provided participants with important knowledge about assault and battery laws, utilizing case studies to illustrate key concepts. Participants learned the process for filing complaints and how the Gambian criminal justice system operates. Additionally, the training covered the reporting mechanisms available in cases of assault or battery, all aimed at ensuring journalists can work without fear and have their rights protected.
Enya Braun, representing the EU Ambassador, said journalists play a crucial role in society as they are the voice of the people, the mirror of government and societal accountability, and the defenders of democracy. “We deeply value press freedom, understanding that without it, democracy itself is undermined, and we are here today to affirm our solidarity with Gambian journalists, to help empower and equip them with the knowledge needed to protect their rights, and to support an environment that upholds the rule of law for all,” she said.
Jainaba Faye, Head of the Country Office of IDEA, said the guide is a testament to her office’s commitment to protecting journalists in their line of duty.
“Knowledge empowers you to protect yourselves legally and physically and this guide goes further to not only outline your rights but also offers practical advice on how to de-escalate potentially violent situations, ensuring your safety while you conduct your duties,” Jainaba Faye said to the participants.
Faye encouraged participants to not only familiarize themselves with the guide but also to share it with colleagues and peers, fostering a culture where journalists can work confidently and freely, knowing they are equipped with the tools they need to stay safe and informed.
Muhammed S. Bah, President of The Gambia Press Union, expressed his gratitude to International IDEA and the European Union for their support in developing the union's first Assault and Battery Guide and for facilitating essential training on its use. He emphasized that this guide will benefit the union and its stakeholders in safeguarding the rights and well-being of journalists. Bah also reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the proper utilization of the guide to promote an environment of safety and respect for media professionals.
International IDEA and the EU supported the Gambia Press Union by handing over several items, including two laptops, one printer, five filing cabinets, arch files, and two years of QuickBooks and Google Drive subscriptions. This assistance aims to enhance the GPU secretariat's operational capabilities.
