Roundtable discussion on Indigenous inclusion in governance

Date
21 August 2024
Time
9:00am - 2:30pm
Location
UN Building, Bangkok

With the mutual goal of supporting inclusive political processes, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will jointly host a roundtable for Indigenous leaders and advocates in Asia.

The roundtable will discuss the most persistent challenges facing Indigenous peoples and identify avenues for meaningful representation, inclusion, and participation in governance needed to protect and promote their rights.

The invitation-only roundtable will bring together Indigenous leaders and advocates in the region to:

a) Discuss the challenges and opportunities to promote and defend Indigenous rights

amidst shrinking democratic and civic spaces and environmental justice.

b) Identify innovative strategies for meaningful representation, inclusion and participation of Indigenous peoples, including women and youth, to tackle these challenges.

c) Foster an informal network of Indigenous Peoples advocates in the region to facilitate sharing knowledge and experience.

These broad issues will be explored through two thematic sessions: the first on Shrinking Civic Space, and the second on Environmental Justice and Climate Action.
