The UN World Data Forum 2018 will be hosted by Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Authority, of United Arab Emirates from 22 to 24 October 2018, with support from the Statistics Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, under the guidance of the United Nations Statistical Commission and the High-level Group for Partnership, Coordination and Capacity-Building for Statistics for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

In collaboration with the SDG16 Data Initiative, International IDEA will be holding the panel “Innovative technology partnerships for SDG16 monitoring”. Armend Bekaj, Senior Programme Officer at the Democracy Assessment and Political Analysis Unit, will present International IDEA’s Global State of Democracy Indicators and their methodology, showing how this measurement tool can be used to monitor democracy at the national, regional and global level, and support the monitoring of SDG16. This is part of Thematic Area 2, “Innovations and synergies across data ecosystems”, which looks at bring data sources together and creating an enabling environment for the integration and use of non-traditional data sources. The full programme can be found here.

Specifically, the Global State of Democracy Indices depict democratic trends at the country, regional and global levels across a broad range of different attributes of democracy from 1975 until today. Composed of indicators from V-Dem and other sources, the indices cover 155 countries and are updated annually. The database is publicly available and aims to inform strategies of those working on democratic reform at the national, regional and global level. You can find more information on the GSOD indices here.
