Effects of the Conflict on the Legal and Constitutional Framework in Sudan
International IDEA invites you to a virtual panel discussion to address crucial questions related to the armed conflict in Sudan, on the 1st of August, 18:30 (GTM +2, Sudan Time). The panel discussion will focus on the priorities for each of the relevant actors in Sudan or outside Sudan to ensure an end to the armed conflict and a return to a democratic process and pathway in Sudan.
The panel will focus on the core issues that must be addressed for reestablishing a peaceful and democratic political and constitutional process in Sudan, and those that must be prioritized based on the experiences of the transition up until the conflict. Primary among these concerns will be the role of the transitional sovereignty council and the necessity for a civilian-led transitional process and mechanism, the necessity for political actors to come together on the most important issues putting aside their exclusivist political visions to form a majority-based cross-party alliance, and the important role that civil society, academia and the media must play going forward to ensure that there is a coherent messaging and communication related to the immediate needs of Sudanese society, namely an end to the conflict, disarmament and demobilization of armed actors (which may require involving them in the political process in some way) and building a critical mass for a civilian led governance model based on democratic principles.
The Panel will be held in Arabic (with simultaneous interpretation into English) and selected panelists (up to 3) will be facilitated by a moderator from International IDEA.
Members of the public and other experts and actors are invited to participated and field questions to the panelists using audio and through the chat function.
