1. Parity for the purposes of applying this law means a minimum representation of 36% of women on the list for elected positions. 2. To comply with the provisions of the previous paragraph, the multi-member lists presented by the parties cannot contain only candidates of the same gender in order to respect the parity referred to above.(Parity Law, Article 4) |

Parties or coalitions of parties that do not comply with the provisions of paragraph 1 of article 4, suffer a reduction in the total value of the State subsidy for electoral campaigns, to which they would be entitled under article 47. of Law No. 11/2013 of September 25th in the following terms: 2. Parties or coalitions of parties that do not respect the provisions of paragraph 2 of article 4 suffer a 50% reduction in State subsidy for electoral campaigns to which they would be entitled under the terms of article 47, of Law No. 11/2013 of September 25th. 3. The effects of the sanctions applied in paragraphs a) and b) of paragraph 1 and paragraph 2 of this article are in force until the fact that gave rise to them is corrected or they cease on the deadline for submitting candidacies for the electoral act subsequent. Additional information
The Parliament of Guinea-Bissau did, the 2 August 2018, unanimously approve a law to ensure a minimum quota of 36% of women’s representation to be respected in elections or appointments to the National Assembly and Local Governments, with a view to achieving parity. The law was unanimously voted by the 81 MPs present. The National Assembly (ANP) thus concluded two days of discussion under the leadership of the chairman of the Specialized Commission for Women and Children, Ms. Martina Moniz (UNIOGBIS, 2018).
