Electoral system for the president
The Gambia
Nohlen et al. Elections in Africa: A Data Handbook. 1999
Before the enactment of the 1997 Constitution, Gambia was governed by the 1970 Constitution. The 1970 Constitution calls for the election of the president through the deputy candidates’ preferences. If a candidate could gather the majority of the elected deputies’ preferences, a second election round will not be held.
However, from 1982 onwards, the President was directly elected according to the plurality system though this was not reflected in the law.
