Even though the ElectoralLaw establishes an electoral system, the elections scheduled for December 2001have been postponed indefinitely. There has never been an election since theyoung nation got its independence in 1993. However, local elections continue totake place, with the latest being held in May 2003. According To Freedom House,all voting for local public office has been conducted in town meeting-stylesessions presided over by PFDJ cadres. PFDJ stands for People’s Front forDemocracy and Justice, the ruling party in Eritrea
