Garantizar la celebración ordenada de las próximas elecciones de posguerra en Ucrania, de manera que se asegure la confianza de todos los actores electorales en el proceso y los resultados de las elecciones, será vital para sostener el desarrollo democrático y la reconstrucción exitosa del país. Estas elecciones de posguerra presentarán desafíos de naturaleza y magnitud sin precedentes, en el espacio físico y en línea, al organismo de gestión electoral y otras autoridades estatales encargadas de proteger la integridad de las elecciones.

Ahead of the presidential 'election' in Russia scheduled for 15-17 March 2024, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) wishes to underscore the importance of upholding the defining principles of independent international election observation. These include, among others, unimpeded access to key phases of the electoral cycle and to electoral personnel, freedom of movement across the country, and freedom to issue statements and reports.
The European Commission adopted its Defence of Democracy Package on Tuesday, 12 December 2023. The package encompasses a directive, two recommendations and a communication aiming at shielding European Democracy from malign foreign actors and bolstering democratic resilience from within.
International IDEA’s collaborative efforts with partners such as the European Partnership for Democracy, have significantly influenced the formulation of the European Commission’s Defence of Democracy package. On Tuesday, the European Commission launched its long-awaited Defence of Democracy package. For months, public debate around the package has been absorbed by controversy over its Directive on interest representation by third countries, the centrepiece of which is a transparency register for donations from outside the EU.
On 1 December 2023, International IDEA’s Council of Member States, chaired by the Netherlands, unanimously approved a membership request from France. The country joins the intergovernmental organization as its 35th Member State. France’s membership comes with a strong message of support for the Institute’s work, including a foreseen core contribution of 500,000 EUR for 2024 to back the Institute’s operations and knowledge production.
Since May 2023, in light of the intensification of Ukraine’s EU candidacy, International IDEA has supported Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada in enhancing its understanding of the European Parliament’s law-making and internal functioning. As the Rada works towards more intensive EU law transposition, both expertise and direct engagement with European legislators have become vital.
The Dutch Chairship of International IDEA in 2023 culminated in the second bi-annual Council of Member States meeting and a set of side events, organized on 30 November and 1 December 2023 at the Institute’s headquarters in Stockholm and online. In its role as the Chair of the Institute, the Netherlands was supported by the Vice Chairs Ghana and Chile.
La presidencia holandesa de IDEA Internacional en 2023 culminó con la segunda reunión bianual del Consejo de Estados Miembros y una serie de eventos paralelos, organizados el 30 de noviembre y el 1 de diciembre de 2023 en la sede del Instituto en Estocolmo y en línea. En su papel de Presidente del Instituto, los Países Bajos contaron con el apoyo de los vicepresidentes de Ghana y Chile.
At the Council of Member States meeting convened on 1 December 2023 at International IDEA’s Headquarters in Stockholm, the Netherlands, represented by Ambassador Bengt van Loosdrecht, handed over the Chairship of International IDEA to Luxembourg, represented by Ambassador Henri Schumacher. The transition in the Institute’s leadership also saw the appointment of Norway as Vice Chair.
