On April 15th, 2023, tensions between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) turned into fighting, escalating into a severe armed conflict that has engulfed the country in what risks turning into a large-scale civil war. The warring factions took power together through a military coup on October 25th, 2021, which upended a fragile democratic transition that started after the removal of long-time ruler Omar Al-Bashir.

Securing Ukraine’s capacity to conduct future post-war elections in a free, orderly, and transparent manner will be vital for the continued integrity of its democratic governance and for the success of its recovery and reconstruction. One key challenge lying ahead of Ukraine will be to ensure the voting rights and opportunities for its displaced citizens, many of whom will be casting their vote from outside of Ukraine.
International IDEA is convening a round table to facilitate discussions on democratization in Africa, looking specifically at emerging trends in political transitions, electoral integrity and civic participation as three key areas for addressing the future of democracy in Africa. The event will also present the findings and recommendations on popular uprisings in Africa and the responses of the African Union (AU) and regional institutions to transitions emanating from such uprisings.
This dialogue event brings together reform-makers from Ukraine’s Government and civil society to discuss where Ukraine’s strongest achievements lie in its post-Euromaidan democratic reforms, how they enhance the country’s standing to achieve its EU candidate status and what more remains to be done.

Join our online roundtable that aims to contribute to a better understanding of the current and likely future effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on democracies in Armenia, Georgia and Moldova. The priority theme of the session is 'Women's full and effective participation and decision-making in public life, as well as the elimination of violence, for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls'.
This concept note outlines the need for the Women in Political Participation in Africa Barometer validation ahead of the launch of the Barometer on 18 March 2021. The validation will facilitate the finalisation of the Barometer publication with inputs from across Africa and references to key case studies. The reviewers will present a comprehensive report on preliminary findings of the research.

The Global Peace Index is the flagship annual report produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP). This year’s report is the 14th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI), which ranks 163 independent states and territories according to their relative levels of peacefulness. The GPI is the world’s leading measure of global peacefulness.
On 4 October, International IDEA will co-organize an international roundtable in Kiev on “Parliamentary immunity and indemnity. Amendments to the Constitution”. The debate will focus on the restriction of parliamentary immunity for Ukrainian MPs. The main purpose of the discussion is to examine the positions of parliamentary factions about the immunity of MPs and to discuss whether to limit parliamentary immunity.
