Après 1986, Haïti a choisi la voie démocratique en adoptant une nouvelle Constitution, qui prévoit notamment l’établissement d’un organisme de gestion électorale indépendant : le Conseil électoral permanent (CEP). Toutefois, trente ans plus tard, le pays ne connait qu’une succession de conseils électoraux provisoires.
En vue de renforcer la participation et le leadership des femmes, IDEA International a organisé les premières assises nationales des mairesses d’Haïti.
Grâce à l’implémentation du quota de genre d’au moins 30 % de femmes, tel que prescrit par la Constitution, 143 mairesses ont été élues dans le pays en 2015.
As part of its support for the democratic consolidation process in Haiti and the promotion of women's rights, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) supported a workshop of Haitian women’s organizations to discuss constitutional amendments for gender equality on 1 March 2018.
On 13 and 18 February 2018, two major fires ravaged two important public markets in the country's capital, the Hyppolite and Port marketplaces located in downtown Port-au-Prince. The traders have suffered estimated loss of several thousand US dollars while the authorities, who formed an inter-ministerial commission under the leadership of the Ministry for Women's Affairs and Women's Rights to support the victims, have still not presented the official balance of the damages recorded.
On 19-20 October 2017, International IDEA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Gender Issues in Haiti, held an important forum that gathered women´s organizations and political parties to discuss the strategies and possible interventions to promote and strengthen the role of women in politics in the country.
One month after having voted the national budget, both houses of parliament have received stark criticisms from Haitians, both within the country and abroad. Haiti is facing a tense situation due to repeated strikes in public transportation sector and weekly demonstrations, often ending in violence scenes and breakages.

“We loved this way of training people! It is very different from what we are used to, very deep and useful”. This is what a participant expressed about the three oratory training sessions organized by International IDEA from 23 to 30 May 2017 at Côte des Arcadins in Haiti. Despite a contested electoral process, the 92 deputies and 14 senators elected in October last year were sworn in on 10 January.
