Female politicians and young women aspiring to join politics from 47 counties have received a five-day training from the 5th Women in Political Participation (WPP) Academy on how to enhance their political leadership skills, promote inclusivity in political participation and inspire young women to join politics.
The informal and formal barriers to women’s political decision-making still exist, six years before the expiration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Amongst the informal factors we still witness, culture, tradition and religion are being used to water down women’s agency in meaningful participation in political decision-making. This Women’s Day should be a time to reflect on how women influenced some milestone political decisions.
The recently concluded fifth Women Political Participation (WPP) Academy by the Forum for Africa Women Educationalists (FAWE) was a residential five-day training. It targeted women who hold political positions in Kenya’s government, women who vied in the 2022 Kenyan general election, young women aspiring to join politics whose age bracket is between 18 to 35 years, and student leaders. The participants were drawn from the 47 counties within Kenya.
Thailand’s constitution was made in 2017 by the military junta government. Although it was approved by referendum, the 2017 Constitution remains highly unpopular due to its origin. Constitutional reform was a central issue during the tightly contested 2023 elections, in which an unprecedented voter turnout demonstrated strong support for democratic and progressive parties. The same demand, of amending the 2017 Constitution, was repeated throughout the 2020-2021 mass protest movement.
As new political developments come to light in Thailand, the spotlight is again on the intricate relationship between money and politics in the country. The 2023 General Elections were watched closely not only for their outcomes but also for the way campaigns were funded and conducted.
One of the particularities of what is currently being negotiated between Saudi Arabia and Ansar Allah is that the parties are contemplating establishing a revenue allocation mechanism in the absence of an overarching constitutional or political framework.
Thailand has made several efforts to reform key aspects of its political finance system, including regulations relating to funding for political parties and election campaigns. Yet, several challenges remain that merit constant improvements and innovation to regulate political finance and put appropriate systems and processes in place to ensure enforcement.

In April 2017, International IDEA initiated a one-year project to organize dialogue sessions between leading Yemeni actors in an effort to bridge the divide on the country’s future system of government. The project, “Support to the Yemeni Peace Process—Constitutional Dialogues”, is being organized in cooperation with the United Nations Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary General for Yemen (UNOSESGY), which is leading the formal peace negotiations.
