This lecture marks the first event in the Stockholm Series of Public Lectures on Climate Change and Democracy. This new initiative is a cooperation between renowned Stockholm-based institutions with a particular focus on climate change and democracy from different perspectives. It aims to inform, inspire, and engage experts and the general public alike by providing high-profile public lectures on the interlinkages between climate change and democracy followed by debate.

Climate disinformation and what it means for the democratic conversation was the topic of the first event in the Stockholm Series of Public Lectures on Climate Change and Democracy, which took place on 23 April 2024 at International IDEA’s Headquarters in Stockholm.

BRUSSELS – With increasing pressure on democracy globally, and the new security context in Europe, the enlargement of the European Union (EU) to new members in Eastern Europe and the Western Balkans is back on the agenda of European leaders. But to maintain internal coherence and ease joint decision making, all members be it aspiring or current EU Member States, should fully embrace the rule of law.

Bengt Säve-Söderbergh, como secretario general fundador del Instituto Internacional para la Democracia y Asistencia Electoral, desempeñó un papel clave en el establecimiento de IDEA Internacional en febrero de 1995. Serving as the founding Secretary-General of International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, Bengt Säve-Söderbergh played a key role in establishing International IDEA in February 1995. During his tenure as the first Secretary-General from 1995-2002, he positioned the Institute at the forefront of electoral assistance, gender equality, and democracy support.
On 22 April 2024, the 50/50 Group Sierra Leone, with support from International IDEA held a National Level Dialogue to share findings from a post-election gender audit conducted on the 2023 elections.
The Political Parties Regulation Commission, with support from the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) has started a district level training of political parties on the use and implementation of the intra-party dispute resolution guide. The aim is to support the establishment of permanent infrastructures within political parties to identify, mitigate, transform, and resolve conflicts within these parties.
The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), through the Sierra Leone Democracy Strengthening Programme, funded by the European Union (EU) has facilitated a 4-day (19th – 22nd February) peer learning visit for the PPRC aimed at fostering shared learning and exploring best practices in political and campaign financing for the PPRC of Sierra Leone.
This Discussion Paper reviews the performance of 16 lobbying registers according to 3 interlinked dimensions: (a) transparency; (b) regulatory capacity; and (c) interoperability. Under ‘transparency’, the paper examines the scope of lobbying information collected by the register in question, as well as how that information is administered and subsequently disclosed.
International IDEA’s collaborative efforts with partners such as the European Partnership for Democracy, have significantly influenced the formulation of the European Commission’s Defence of Democracy package. This success is marked by a series of impactful joint initiatives conducted throughout 2022 and 2023:
The European Commission adopted its Defence of Democracy Package on Tuesday, 12 December 2023. The package encompasses a directive, two recommendations and a communication aiming at shielding European Democracy from malign foreign actors and bolstering democratic resilience from within.
This Brief presents some findings on the Summit for Democracy process from the perspective of participating countries based on a selected number of interviews with representatives from the governments of six countries (Germany, Lithuania, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Zambia) and the European Union (European External Action Service).

Following a year of implementation of the 'Sierra Leone Democracy Strengthening Programme', International IDEA and its partners, recently organized a programme review workshop that brought together boundary partners, the donor and other actors in the governance space in Sierra Leone to review progress and challenges in the programme implementation, and to set priorities in response to the post-election context in the country.
